Dear Friends,
We start this month's newsletter focusing on one of the fundamental keys for development - Water!
Surrounded as we are by water filled plastic bottles and gurgling dispensers, it's startling to realize that about a third of the world's population, particularly in Africa and Asia, don't have adequate sanitation and that over a billion people have no access to clean, safe drinking water. Whilst bottled water is almost a must-have fashion accessory in the western world, in these regions water often represents the route to disease, illness and death. There are many ways Fair Trade helps, for example social premiums are often used to build community wells, and earned income allows families to purchase water filtration systems.
This month water has provided us with a different set of challenges. At 2.15 am on a Saturday morning in late August we were woken to find that water was running down the walls and across the ceiling of the store! New London firemen, alerted by our fire alarm, were occupying the premises and (bless their hearts!) by the time that we arrived their large tarpaulin had saved product displays and computer equipment from any significant losses. Nevertheless, the water escaping from the second floor apartment had done enough damage to require our closure for six days whilst walls and ceiling were demolished, dried out, treated and rebuilt!
We apologize if you were inconvenienced during those six days. We also want to especially thank Digga (aka Rob Schacht, from Huntsbrook Farm) and Striker for the super job on our new wall. Bedecked now with beautiful, black La Chamba cookware and a
re-organized store (with much new inventory), is well worth a visit, so please come and see for yourselves!!
Have an exciting October & Halloween! |

| October is Fair Trade Month |
|
|

As we honor the contribution of fair trade farmers throughout the developing world, it also serves as a reminder of our connection to both the people and the planet. Martin Luther King once said "Before you've finished your breakfast this morning, you'll have relied on half the world". As we all strive to reduce our carbon footprint, and support our local farmers, those items we can not source locally, we can strive to source fairly.
Make a deeper connection to fair trade, ask your employer, church, or school to serve fair trade products. When ordering coffee to go or in a restaurant, ask if they offer a fair trade option.
During the month of October we will be offering free samples of coffee, chocolate, teas & cocoa. And don't forget to stop in for our delicious fair trade chocolate brownies during the

Host a fair trade shopping party! |
|
|
Great way to connect with friends
We offer an exciting fun way to earn money for your organization, or as a hostess, earn credit for shopping at Flavours. In-store shopping parties are also a fun way to connect with friends, co-workers, and family.
Here's how it works. You or your oranization can reserve an evening for an after hours shopping party at Flavours. We will supply refreshments, and educational information about Fair Trade. You (or your organization) invite people to your in-store party and bring snacks. A percentage of the evening's sales can be donated to your organization or earned as in-store credit.
Call us today to book your in-store party! |
| New Shipments Arriving Daily |
|
|
Over the next few weeks the bulk of our holiday shipments will be arriving. We have exciting new chocolates, (just in time for Halloween) such as gold coin milk chocolates (kosher certified) and dark Fruit & Nut by Divine. Also Equal Exchange has just added a new Dark Orange flavour to their line. These all make great gifts for kids, friends, & family.
Look for more culturally diverse & recycled products from us this fall. We are now buying from several more established groups such as Serrv International and Global Exchange in order to expand our range of offerings in these areas. On the other side of the coin, we are also working with several new (startup) fair trade groups with products unlike any we've had before. We'll send more info on these groups in our next newsletter.
Stop in the store for a sneak peak of our new products - the ingenuity always amazes us! |

Our Power |
|
|
We have all been bombarded recently by news reports that may make one feel downright awful. There almost seems to be a fervor of excitement as each new day brings yet more "bad" news. There is nothing more discouraging than being made to feel a victim to this economic "crisis".
Yet, much of what is not reported, is the power we do have. We are not victims! We have much power within our communities, and within our values and beliefs. Some might argue that our collective economic mite is more powerful than voting. Everyday, with every dollar, you get to vote! Does your spending reflect your beliefs, what you support? With money being at the forefront of our minds lately, it now seems more important than ever to be asking ourselves these questions.
We hope that if you do choose to buy, and have the means to do so responsibly, that you consider buying fair trade gifts this holiday season as well as supporting our local business partners. |

Thank you for supporting Fair Trade!
Best wishes, David & Marcie |
