Dear Friends,
Happy New Year! We are a little late in wishing you prosperity for 2009 and you may be forgiven for thinking that we had decided to forgo this courtesy as the cold winds of economic doom and gloom swirl around our lives!

We've decided to take a positive stand!

Maybe a recession with all it's its cruel austerity, is also a time for emphasising the value of home, family and community, finding value in the company of our friends and neighbours, enjoying the downtown entertainment and shops. Living locally.

In sub-Saharan Africa or much of Latin America and South East Asia, where people already disadvantaged by the geography of their birth, live on less than a dollar a day, the impact of the global recession is likely to be even more severe. It is these already impoverished producers from whom we source our Fair Trade products. Our aim for the coming year, our New Years Resolution for 2009, is to double our efforts in helping them sustain their livelihoods during this time of economic uncertainty.

2008: End Of Year Report

waterLast year was a Rollercoaster, latterly overshadowed by doubts, as realization of the recession sunk in. Despite this, and due to your magnificent support, we ended the year 2% up on 2007!

As in previous years the first, winter months of the year proved something of an endurance test with a combination of low sales and low temperatures! Spring heralded the first signs of new growth with the green shoots appearing around Earth Day. Summer this year was truly marvellous, a great celebration of community in The District. Week after week events organized by The Hygienic, DNLA and NLMS meant that the streets were buzzing. Extra enjoyment for us was provided at the Old Lyme Midsummer Arts Festival, Sacred Dance Guild at Conn College and Wadsworth Mansion Fair. As Fall and Winter approached In-Store Parties and Fundraisers (e.g Meet Charles Dickens (ETC), Flock Theater, Heifer International, Fiddleheads Food Coop) helped to build the seasonal festive feel which culminated in the excitement of Christmas.

As a result, and largely due to your support we estimate that producers of Fair Trade products, many of whose stories continue to touch and enthral us all, have received at least $30,000 resulting from our sales. Thank you for supporting Fair Trade.

Fair Trade in the White House

coffeeReliable sources assure us that new President Barack Obama enjoys drinking Equal Exchange coffee at his church! He has previously drunk other fairly traded coffee on his various political campaigns in the past.

So a movement is now afoot to declare the White House a Fair Trade Zone! Transfair, the third party agency which accredits fair trade food commodities in the US, is looking at ways to achieve this worthy goal.   We'll keep you posted on progress, in the meantime you all know where you can buy Equal Exchange fairly traded coffee........!?

Who'da thought that...... ?

Lets not let the doom and gloom blind us to the fact that good things are happening!

  • Who'da thought that a plane, minutes after leaving La Guardia, crashed into the Hudson River and everyone walked out alive (with wet feet!).
  • Who'da thought that an African-American President sits in the White House.

Please let us know your "Who'da thoughts", we'll print them in the next newsletter (thank you for the idea Edna).

We want to hear from you!
